San Jose State baseball is looking to collect its first conference win this season as it prepares to take on rivals Fresno State this Friday. The Spartans' Tuesday and Wednesday games against University of the Pacific were postponed due to rain, hopefully giving SJSU more time to prepare for its next conference game. SJSU stands 6-9 overall, but is stuck at 0-5 in conference play. Last weekend, the Spartans were swept by the University of Nevada, Reno in their first out-of-state bid. SJSU entered conference play with a winning record for the first time since joining the Mountain West, but has been unable to keep up its streak. MIDLAND ZOO MOURNS THE LOSS OF HOMER THE POLAR BEAR The Midland Zoo is sad to announce the death of our oldest polar bear, Homer. Homer passed away early this morning at the age of 16. Two other polar bears, 9-year-old Yukon and 10-year-old McKenzie, are safe but were removed from the exhibit and are being monitored by veterinary staff.  "Homer was a very curious and playful polar bear and we will miss him terribly," said zookeeper Sara N. Getty. The zoo is still investigating the exact cause of death. Have you ever woken up after a night of drinking feeling like death? Well, a new study has found that consuming moderate amounts of alcohol may actually increase your lifespan. "The 90+ Study," which came out of the University of California Irvine, determined that people who drank modest amounts of alcohol or coffee lived longer than those who did not.  "I have no explanation for it, but I do firmly believe that modest drinking improves longevity," said Claudia Kawas, a key researcher for the study. Subjects who drank two glasses of beer or wine daily decreased their chances of premature death by 18 percent. Drinking two cups of coffee a day decreased chances by 10 percent. The study also determined that people who were overweight in their 70s lived longer than those who were normal or underweight, and that regular exercise and keeping busy with a regular hobby is key to living a longer life.
